Spirit Airlines Unveils Updated Go Comfy Seating Option

Spirit Airlines has announced a new extra-legroom seating option and exclusive loyalty benefits for members of its Free Spirit loyalty program.

Go Comfy: More Pitch, No Blocked Middle Seat

For many budget travelers, the trade-off for cheap tickets used to be comfort, but that narrative has shifted in recent years. Almost two decades ago, in 2007, Spirit Airlines introduced its “Big Front Seat,” which provided passengers with more spacious seating at the front of the plane. Since then, the carrier has been committed to maintaining the compelling nature of the product, which sometimes sees business travelers eschew their preferred US airlines for a Big Front Seat.

For example, the seats were updated in 2019 with a new headrest and more memory foam padding, and then replaced again in 2022 with new seats manufactured by HAECO Cabin Solutions that offered wider dimensions, extra cushioning and enhanced comfort features.

Last July, Spirit introduced the “Go Big bundle” along with Go Comfy, Go Savvy, and Go. The Go Big bundle included a Big Front Seat, which offers 36-inches of pitch and 18.5-inches of width, located in the first two rows of the plane, alongside complimentary Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks, and priority check-in.

The Go Comfy product bundle aims to bridge the gap between standard economy and premium economy. It initially included a blocked middle seat in the cabin, a carry-on, a checked bag, a snack, and a non-alcoholic drink.

However, Spirit has announced that it will adjust its Go Comfy product less than a year after its introduction. Seats in Go Comfy will now have a total pitch of 32-inches, up from the current 28 inches. That said, Spirit is phasing out the blocked middle seat in Go Comfy.

In addition to the extra legroom seats, passengers traveling in Go Comfy will receive a complimentary carry-on bag, no change or cancellation fees, priority boarding, reserved overhead bin space, a snack, and a non-alcoholic beverage.

The new Go Comfy preferred seating will include seven rows near the front of the aircraft for 42 seats, up from the 12 Go Comfy seats the airline offers today. Installation will begin in June 2025, with deployment across the entire fleet expected to be complete in 2026.

The new seating layout will be available to book based on availability starting on May 15 for travel beginning July 9. Spirit Airlines Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Rana Ghosh commented, “Spirit’s new premium options offer travelers exceptional value, and we’re creating even more opportunities for Guests to experience them with our new extra-legroom seating option.”

A Revamped Free Spirit Loyalty Program With More Benefits

Spirit also overhauled its Free Spirit loyalty program this week, including upgraded benefits for Free Spirit Mastercard cardholders and for Free Spirit Status members: “We’re also adding more value and perks for our loyalty members at a time when others are taking away benefits, giving our most loyal Guests even more reasons to choose Spirit,” Gosh commented.

The airline has expanded redemption options for travelers. Members of the Free Spirit loyalty program can redeem all four travel options: Go Big, Go Comfy, Go Savvy, and Go. In the coming months, the airline plans to add more redemptions, such as personalized experiences and elevated perks.

Additionally, beginning in June, Free Spirit status members and travelers with the Free Spirit credit card will be eligible for complimentary upgrades to Go Big or Go Comfy at boarding. These upgrades will be extended to one travel companion on the member’s reservation. Upgrades will be based on availability and status level.

Later this year, passengers holding the Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard will get two free checked bags. Moreover, Spirit will launch the Free Spirit Debit Card in the fall. It will allow cardholders to earn Free Spirit points on everyday purchases and use them to travel on Spirit. Cardholders of the Free Spirit Debit Card will receive Group 2 priority boarding and 25% back on in-flight purchases.
